Hi Guaka

I just found this VeganWiki today. I wrote also a message on https://www.facebook.com/groups/vegantravel/ to ask the founder of the group to comment on contribution to VeganWiki or any other platform to share information for Vegans as the FB page does not have any features to have a serious documentation like an up to date MediaWiki.

I registered myself and noticed the following things:

* de.veganwiki.info runs on DokuWiki and has issues when you open it, what's the status there and why is it not connected with this MediaWiki-Server?
* I added Switzerland on the main page with the assistant, nothing happend on the mainpage (probably it's a protected page)?

Can you say something about your Vegan community like how long does it exist, how many people are actively working on it and how long will the VeganWiki project last if more people are joining and creating traffic, does the banner on the bottom finance it for itself?

Thanks and have a good day!
:Hi huggi, good to see your edits and questions!

:*There's nothing at http://de.veganwiki.info/ I think you mean http://veganwiki.de/, and yes, I'm not a fan of DokuWiki and veganwiki.de is run by someone else. Wouldn't be easy to "connect" these two projects. I support any free licensed (ideally Creative Commons CC-BY-SA) projects though.
:* The [[Main Page]] is protected but the country list on the main page is created through a Semantic MediaWiki query. After you created [[Switzerland]] it was added automatically (but because of cache it may have taken more time).
:* [[Special:Statistics]] would have been interesting if it wasn't for a recent spam attack. Veganwiki is not extremely active, but it's also not dead. It's growing slowly, also for Google results. I think it could grow faster at some point, e.g. because of promotion in some FB group ;) Problem remains that MediaWiki is not the most user friendly for random people to edit and add stuff.
:* I'm happy to help with anything. Good to see your questions. Note that you can ''sign'' with <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>.
:Good question. Actually when you click on the links here you get to the first redirected page, [[Milk]], and there it says (Redirected from [[Rice milk]]). When you click on that Rice milk link you get to the redirect page itself, where you can click edit. Start by removing the #redirect [[Dairy milk]] part. (There are some other ways but I think this is the simplest in this context. One other way is to make your own URLs to do stuff, check the action=edit and title=Almond_milk parts here: https://veganwiki.info/w/index.php?title=Almond_milk&action=edit).
:Another good one is to find the link at [[Special:ListRedirects]], which you can find at [[Special:SpecialPages]].

:Thanks, [[User:Guaka|Guaka]] ([[User talk:Guaka|talk]]) 09:11, 27 August 2015 (CEST)
* http://github.com/guaka/veganwiki/ This repository is empty. :)
* anyway, I did some research, listed in: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:VeganWiki
* try to contact veganwiki.org owners and get the domain for your project, .info is cool but .org is better for a community.
* I think the veganwiki.co.uk is also okay, but only local for UK.
* how do I simply include WP articles the best (without any copy&paste)?
== Plant milk pages ==

[[Almond milk]], [[Oat milk]] and [[Rice milk]] all redirect to [[Dairy milk]]. I think they deserve their own page, or at least be directed to [[Plant milk]]. I don't know how to do that.
Thanks. [[User:Harrys|Harrys]] ([[User talk:Harrys|talk]]) 02:07, 19 April 2020 (CEST)

:Good question. Actually when you click on the links here you get to the redirect page, you can simply click edit it.
: Kasper, quality not quantity, or what do you think? The reason I've abandoned editing on Hitchwiki is because I saw Trashwiki as a priority, and I do not have time for more wikis in my life (I wish I had!). Now I guess I will be balancing between Trashwiki and Veganwiki, and unfortunately I barely see a busking wiki as a priority over the other ones. == Country categories? ==
I thought it could be good to forget about categories for countries since semantic functionality is much more powerful. That's why I started removing them (and moving to SMW stuff). But if you think they're useful I'm okay with leaving them. [[User:Guaka|Guaka]] ([[User talk:Guaka|talk]]) 20:18, 27 December 2013 (GMT)
:Oh, I see. I was wondering what happened to them :-) Semantic functionality works fine but will it be implemented for all kinds of pages? For example, vegan societies or vegan events that exist in different countries (there are no such pages yet, but there will be in the future). If yes, then I'm OK with no categories. If not, then it would be usefull to put "Vegan Society" into "Category:UK", "Vegefood Festa" to "Category:Tokyo", etc. --[[User:Linas|Linas]] ([[User talk:Linas|talk]]) 00:19, 28 December 2013 (GMT)
:Hiya! Oh, sweet! I've never been an admin before! And this is my first time working on a wiki at all so I don't really know what I'm doing but I'm trying my best. What exactly does being an admin mean? :) [[User:Anklasse|Anklasse]] ([[User talk:Anklasse|talk]]) 13:55, 3 January 2014 (GMT)

::Great! You can now "protect" and delete pages and you can block users. It's mainly good in case spammers find veganwiki one day. That, and I found it good practice to give out these rights on wikis, as giving out rights like this makes it somehow more likely to create an active community (: [[User:Guaka|Guaka]] ([[User talk:Guaka|talk]]) 23:27, 4 January 2014 (GMT)

[[File:Veganarchism.svg|thumb|The classic circled "A" of anarchism intersected with a "V" for veganism.]]
'''Veganarchism''' or '''vegan anarchism''' is one of many specific anarchist ideological directions, combining the ideas of anarchism and [[Veganism|veganism]] into an ideology concerned with the liberation of all animals - human and non-human alike - from the oppressive nature of capitalism and the state. It has been described as a vegan perspective on anarchism or an anarchist perspective on veganism.

Veganarchists often consider human supremacy or [[Speciesism|speciesism]] an oppressive force equal to racism, sexism, and capitalism, among others. They advocate revolution and direct action in the struggle against the state and human supremacy. Their end goal is called ''veganarchy'', in which neither human nor non-human animals would be discriminated against or oppressed.

==Origins==
The term ''veganarchist'' was popularised by Brian A. Dominick in his 1995 pamphlet ''Animal Liberation and Social Revolution'', in which he writes:

"In this essay I wish to demonstrate that any approach to social change must be comprised of an understanding not only of social relationships, but also between the relationships between humans and nature, including non-human animals. I also hope to show herein why no approach to animal liberation is feasible without a thorough understanding of and immersion in the social revolutionary endeavor. We must all become, if you will, 'veganarchists'."[http://zinelibrary.info/animal-liberation-and-social-revolution]

Anarchists then, according to Dominick, could and should incorporate an understanding of animal liberation into their opposition to the state and capitalism, and vegans should and could incorporate other struggles - such as anti-racism, anti-sexism, anti-capitalism etc. - into their politics.

==Direct Action==
Veganarchists, as most other anarchists, propagate the use of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_action| direct action] through both legal and illegal means. This can consist of, amongst other actions, liberating animals from farms or labratories or vandalising property. Veganarchism is in some ways, although unofficial, connected to the [[Animal Liberation Front|ALF]], in both practice and ideology. ALF actions are normally supposed to be non-violent and to take precaution not to harm any living beings, but sometimes activists - although not necessarily veganarchists - have been known to commit violence towards other people; although they usually do this under other names than ALF, such as [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_Rights_Militia Animal Rights Militia - ARM].

== Welcome / Introduction ==

Dear new [[Veganwiki]] reader, welcome to "our world".

As our name already says, it's a [[Wiki]]-system for interested readers and editors, which come and act in "good faith".

We don't judge anyone on it's origin, reason for being a:
* [[Consciousness|conscious]] [[Meat]] [[Eating|eater]]
* [[Semi-vegetarianism|Semi-vegetarian]]: [[Pescetarianism|Pescatarian]], [[Plant-based diet]]
* [[Vegetarian]]: [[Ovo-lacto vegetarianism|ovo-lacto]] (most common "vegetarian"), [[Ovo vegetarianism|ovo]], [[Lacto vegetarianism|lacto]], [[Vegan]]
* [[Food intolerance]]: [[Gluten-related disorders]]
* [[Food allergy]]: [[Fruit allergy]] (see also: [[Food Allergy Initiative]])
* and even related/tolerated, '''BUT NOT FOCUSED ON''' private topics like [[drugs]], [[religion]], [[politics]] and [[sex]]
* if I forgot a specific group, please feel free to add it, I might be wrong too :)

Most of the active editors here at [[Veganwiki]] are also part of [[Wikipedia]] and we believe that they are doing "in general" a good job, but of course the focus of [[Wikipedia]] is being an [[gratis|free-access]], [[free content|free-content]] [[Internet encyclopedia]], supported and hosted by the [[Nonprofit organization|non-profit]] [[w:Wikimedia Foundation|Wikimedia Foundation]].

'''Our goals include''' for example, but not exclusively:
* Every article which is based on a Wikipedia article will include the below, but you can inform yourself with one-click on Wikipedia with the public view of the topic. The Category is Wikipedia: [[:Category:Wikipedia]] or [[:Category:No-Wikipedia]]
* Everything is written with [[VPOV|Veganwiki point of view]] in mind
* Becoming a reliable source for Vegans
* Not replicating anything which is available in Wikipedia
* In general our editing is "vegan", at least "vegetarian" and some content might contain also the topic of [[Animals]] or [[Animal products]], we're not a "certified vegan" website yet :)
* Help people with [[Veganism]] in mind to understand some topics better and find loads of [[Vegan]] resources, which you might not find somewhere else.

== How to read a Veganwiki article ==
After this intro, I would like to give a simple example what you can find on a good Veganwiki article, some are basic but we don't try to include outdated information or something you could find in [[Wikipedia]].

=== Veganwiki Topic ===
Based on the topic, the editor or a group of editors contribute their views to this topic in a "neutral perspective", it's okay to add also some crazy ideas or concepts, we're happy to learn. But please respect the basic goals we try to reach with your help. If one person has a different view, please don't play "kindergarten games" and try to correct the other. If there is something fundamentally wrong, try to use consensus and use the discussion/talk-page on every article. If possible add references to the stuff you write, try to understand the core principles of [[Wikipedia]] which is to only provide reliable information. Please don't have any hard feelings when you edit at Veganwiki, we wanna enjoy the editing and we wanna be proud of the community working together and not against each other.

=== See also ===
Basically all "general articles" contain a "see also" section, if there is a similar article available within Veganwiki, we will mention it there. Also if the topic is related to a List, it is visible there for e.g. [[List of vegetarian organizations]]. Another item we are using the most is the reference to Wikipedia, these are all links in the "see also" section wich start with "Wikipedia:". We believe that Wikipedia can help us saving lots of time with basic definitions of information and also general overviews. Sometimes it's only relevant to the Vegan community or the Wiki article has a different topic, but please make use of any existing Wikipedia article which might be useful in relation to the topic.

=== External links ===
As we are not payed editors or spamers, we would like to use Links to external resources only on a limited basis. We're working on some basic tools to make sure that these external links are working everywhere, but of course there are human errors, outages, moves, unpaved websites and whatnot, but please add external links, not a link farm or spam (we see that and we don't tolerate that).

== Comments/Talk/Discussion ==
Said that, not everything we write is written in stone. If there are major misunderstandings, please let us know and don't fight against us, we are in general open to listen and we trust in you and providing "respect", "good faith" to the Veganwiki community.

As you can see on this page, there is the article which you can edit via the "edit" / "edit via form" button or you can click to the "discussion" page and add your comment there.

I would like to say thank you for your time reading and respecting these basic, simple rules at Veganwiki. Thank you very much! --[[User:Huggi|Huggi]] ([[User talk:Huggi|talk]]) 08:00, 12 September 2015 (CEST)
Dear interested vegan consumer or leader of any vegan Community around the globe!

The Open Vegan Association (OVA) idea/concept/draft is the first attempt, to bring all Vegan Organizations ([[Veganism|Vegans]] worldwide (all continents) together with a few basic rules based on the view of an ethical consumer to work together on the #Agenda2030. Based on the idea of a [[Open society]] (concept from 1932) and [[Open data]] like [[Wikipedia]], [[Veganwiki]] or similar [[Open Source]] or [[Open content]] projects.

I'm a global citizen and traveled all continents and (+50 out of 193 UN member states). The concept is different but borrowed from [[The Open Organisation Of Lockpickers]] which has a totally different view/approach and is not associated with me.

Thank you very much!
== Requirements ==
* To become a member, you need to read, understand, sign and support the 17 specific [[UN]] [[SDG]]s actively with your actions
* Participate in the [[Vegan Progress Index]]
* The deadline or expiry date of this organization is 2030 (starting from 2015), there will be a follow-up organization, but for the time being this organization is for the Sustainable Development of the Vegan Community worldwide.
* Accept and actively support the "Global Goals"

== Global Goals ==
1. Educating with this topic in mind:
In terms of "minimal education", the joining individual or organization should be able to understand and teach others (consumers, customers, companies or other interested parties) the basic principles of [[Veganism]] (but not limited to) but alwways with the [[VegPOV]] in mind.

2. Creating a community which is independent form the following topics:
* Politics (we don't follow/support any specific politic views)
* Religion (we don't follow/support any specific religious views)
* Culture (we are all Vegan people and haven an open mind for different views and understanding, there is enough other fights going on on this planet)

3.Engaging everyone with "basic goals" in English
* To make sure that we all work on the same goals, we engage in the [[UN]] [[SDG]]s Agenda and make our volunteer work a valuable part of the next 15 years (If we are still here in this planet, we can create new goals), until than we stick on the #Agenda2030 by the [[UN]].
* Language (we use and accept English as the Universal Language)

== Commercial Goals ==
* Support free education for vegans and interested parties (making $ not allowed), for e.g. providing access to statistics in your region
* OVA does not impact your local business / memberships or commercial activities as long as they actively support the 17 specific [[SDG]]s ($)
* Make regional events happen ($)
* Promote the [[V-Label#Vegan|Vegan Label]] as Universal Label for a plant-based diet ($)

($) simply allows everyone to charge or not to charge money for that specific topic.

== Status ==
* Phase 1 (2015): Drafting the idea, I'm collecting inputs from various [[Organizations]] to learn and add more specifics to this [[Open letter]] which is distributed to all vegetarian organizations, which I can reach via [[E-Mail]], [[Facebook]] over the [[Internet]] and also [[Offline]] in person. If you want to contact me, please send your message to me@by-night.ch Thank you for your attention/interest!
* Phase 2 (2015): Planing, sorting the details I get from everywhere.
* Phase 3 (2015): Action, founding associations on all continents and make this simple idea happen.
* Phase 4 (2016): Review, look that we implement what was originally planned
* Phase 5: http://www.OVA.online/ has gone online / asking members to join the association.

Proteins are what help to repair your body, make hair, blood, connective tissue, antibodies, enzymes and more.

A protein is made up of [[amino acids]]. In total there are twenty-one amino acids; twelve of these are created by the human body, the other nine, the so called “essential amino acids”, can be absorbed from food via the digestive process.

Different foods have different amino acids, however there are some which contain all the essential amino acids; these are referred to as complete proteins.

For a vegan complete proteins include soybeans, blue green algae, hempseed, buckwheat and quinoa. However, one can also create a complete protein by combining different foods such as legumes with whole grains ([[hummus]], beans and rice, peas and barley, corn and whole grain pasta), nuts or seeds with whole grains (peanut/sunflower seed/almond/cashew butter with whole grain bread, whole grain bread with seeds inside, rice with satay sauce, almonds with whole grain pasta, cashew cream on whole meal cakes), Beans with seeds or nuts (hummus, salad with chickpeas and pumpkin seeds, [[linseed]] and kidney bean burgers, sunflower and white bean balls).

It is important to note that the intake of these amino acids doesn't need to happen all at once, one can consume different parts throughout the day and the body will combine them. For example if you have toast for breakfast, refried beans for lunch and salad with seeds for dinner you have consumed all your essential amino acids.
Guakahttps://veganwiki.info/w/index.php?title=Complete_protein&diff=516197Complete protein2017-07-10T20:55:51Z
Guaka:

{{health}}
How '''healthy''' is [[veganism]]? Just as with omnivorous and vegetarian diets, ensuring a balanced diet is a key. There are plenty of advantages, but there are some higher risks too. Some people actually choose to go vegan exactly because of health reasons. But to blindly follow a vegan doctrine can have sad consequences too, therefore a well-planned diet supplemented by some nutrients is recommended.

==Health arguments==
World renowned cardiologist shatters human omnivore myth in one sentence:

William C. Roberts MD has five decades of experience in the field of cardiology, written over 1300 scientific publications, a dozen cardiology textbooks, and has been editor in chief of the American Journal of Cardiology for a quarter of a century. He is arguably the most highly regarded cardiologist in the world today.

In his 2008 editorial "The Cause of Atherosclerosis", published in the peer reviewed journal Nutrition in Clinical Practice, Roberts states that there is a single, sole cause to heart disease: cholesterol. If your total cholesterol is below 150 and LDL is below 70, you are essentially heart attack proof. What is the cause of high cholesterol? Saturated fat and animal products:

Atherosclerosis is easily produced in nonhuman
herbivores (eg, rabbits, monkeys) by feeding them
a high cholesterol (eg, egg yolks) or high saturated
fat (eg, animal fat) diet… And atherosclerosis was not produced in a
minority of rats fed these diets, it was produced in
100% of the animals! Indeed, atherosclerosis is one
of the easiest diseases to produce experimentally,
but the experimental animal must be an herbivore.
It is not possible to produce atherosclerosis in a
carnivore…"

He elaborates in an earlier editorial:

It is virtually impossible, for example, to produce atherosclerosis in a dog even when 100 grams of cholesterol and 120 grams of butter fat are added to its meat ration. (This amount of cholesterol
is approximately 200 times the average amount that human beings in the USA
eat each day!). (The American Journal of Cardiology, 1990, vol. 66,896.)

He then utterly annihilates the human omnivore myth in a single sentence. here it is:

:Because humans get atherosclerosis, and atherosclerosis is a disease only of herbivores, humans also must be herbivores.

At once the insanity of our times comes into razor sharp relief.

Some may debate whether cholesterol is the sole cause of heart disease. It does not matter, the fact remains that atherosclerosis occurs only in herbivores.

If humans were physiological omnivores, heart disease would not exist, let alone be America's #1 killer for over a hundred years.

It may not be the least bit hyperbolic to say that the existence of heart disease in humans is proof that we, as a species, are vegans.

In any case, a low fat vegan diet has been proven again and again to be the cure for heart disease. A mountain of clinical evidence supports this.

According to Roberts, those who are utterly immune to heart disease without the use of statin drugs are pure vegetarian fruit eaters. His own exact words. fruit eaters.

==Nutrients==
===Protein===
...The seemingly never ending question vegans have to answer is: Where do you get your protein? The common question belies much ignorance regarding protein and our needs for it.

The World Health Organization recommendation is minimum 0.8 grams of protein per day per kilo of body weight. For example a woman who weighs 94 lbs = 43 kg needs 43 x 0.8g = 34 grams protein. This amount can easily be met on a vegan diet that adequately meets the persons caloric needs. A general recommendation for women is 2500 calories per day and for men 3000 calories per day. These will of course vary depending upon amount of physical activity. It should also be noted that an argument can be made in favor of the natural, easily digestible [[amino acids]] found in raw fruits and vegetables which provide higher quality protein than that found in cooked foods because the cooking process has rendered some of the proteins in the food unusable or actually converted them into toxic substances that the body will have to eliminate. In addition there are a variety of problems which arise when too much protein is ingested in the diet.

* Extra proteins can cause kidney problems in people. A diet with too much protein stresses the kidneys. This can also result in the development of kidney stones.
* Another important side effect of too much protein is the accumulation of ''ketones'' in the blood, a condition that is known as ketosis. The kidneys flush out excess proteins along with water, which can lead to dehydration, thus making you feel weak and tired.
* The amount of [[calcium]] required by the body increases with the amount of protein consumed. If your body in unable to get the minimum required calcium, it will start leeching out calcium from the body. This condition can become worse and lead to osteoporosis, where the bones tend to become brittle and break easily. While handling excess protein, kidneys become unable to process uric acid quickly, thus leading to gout, a type of arthritis. Uric acid accumulates in the joints, hence causing pain and tenderness.
* High protein foods that come from animal sources are very high in fats. Excess fat can lead to a rise in cholesterol, eventually putting you at a greater risk of developing heart disease. In case the high protein foods are high in calories, you are likely to gain weight easily.
* Studies show that women who consume excess proteins are more likely to have broken wrists, as compared to women who eat less protein. Other side effects of too much protein include hypertension, dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea, diabetes, cataracts, arteriosclerosis, different kinds of allergies and increase in the acid content in the blood.

===B12===
[[File:Kombucha.jpg|thumb|right|190px|[[Kombucha]] is considered by some as a good source of vitamin B12, although such information is not supported by scientific data.]]
'''[[Vitamin B12]]''' is a very important vitamin for our nervous system. There are varying opinions about whether vegans (and non-vegans) need to take supplements. If you're vegan and you have your blood tested it's good to tell the medical personal to also check for B12 levels.

[[File:Soy_milk.jpg|right|thumb|240px|Soy milk]]
'''Plant milk''' is a [[milk]]-like liquid made out of plants (seeds, [[grains]], [[nuts]], [[legumes]]). There is a wide variety of plant milks (or milk substitutes): soy milk, rice milk, hemp milk, oat milk, almond milk, etc. Some of them are excellent to use for direct drinking, others suit best for replacing cow milk and [[cream]] while cooking.

== Production ==
Plant milk is made by blending grains or seeds ([[soybeans]], [[rice]], [[almonds]]. etc.) with water. Extra ingredients might be added to improve the taste, such as [[sugar]], salt, or vanilla. Because of simple production, it is easy to make plant milk at home. Usually one just needs to soak ingredients in fresh water overnight, then cook them, put through a powerful [[blender]], and then filter out hard leftovers. The dry residue can be used for other recipes. To simplify the process even more, one can use [[soy milk machine]] (some of them can also make almond milk or rice milk).

== Prevalence ==

Plant milk (especially soy milk) can be easily bought in East [[Asia]]n and Southeast Asian countries ([[Japan]], [[South Korea]], [[China]], [[Taiwan]], [[Malaysia]], etc.) The reason for this is that it was invented in China centuries ago and spread with its culture (especially Buddhism). Later it became popular in Western countries (especially in [[North America]] and Western [[Europe]]), and is usually available in most grocery stores as well as in organic&vegetarian shops. It is now popular not only among vegans, but also lactose-intolerant people.

== Types ==
[[File:Lima-organic-lactosefree-vegan-ricemilk-from-Germany-1liter-bottle+cup-1024px.jpg|thumb|right|240px|''Lima'' organic rice milk]]
===[[Soy milk]]===
Soy milk is a good and probably most common and cheap replacement for dairy milk. It's quite thick. Most soy milks (at least in Europe) are GMO free, but watch out for genetically modified soy nonetheless, since it is one of the most genetically modified ingredients in the world (the big part of GM soy serves as a feed for livestock though). Beware that some people are allergic to soy milk.

===Rice milk===
Rice milk is a grain milk made from [[rice]]. It's usually not sweetened, the sweet taste comes from a natural enzymatic process.

===Almond milk===
Almond milk is made out of almonds. In Europe it is usually more expensive than other types of plant milks, while in US prices are generally lower, making it quite a popular choice.

===Oat milk===
Oat milk is made out of [[oats]] and is very common in many [[Europe]]an countries. It is also one of the cheapest types of plant milks.

===Hemp milk===
Hemp milk is a drink made from hemp seeds. Hemp seeds contain a three-to-one ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 essential fatty acids and other nutrients include [[magnesium]], [[phytosterols]], [[ascorbic acid]], [[beta-carotene]], [[calcium]], [[fiber]], [[iron]], [[potassium]], phosphorus, riboflavin, niacin and thiamin, all of which make this plant milk a valuable product for vegans. Hemp milk also contains 10 essential [[amino acids]], making it a good vegan source of protein as hemp protein does not contain phytates, enzyme inhibitors found in some soy protein that can interfere with the absorption of essential minerals. Hemp protein may also be more digestible than soy protein because unlike soy, it doesn't contain oligosaccharides, complex sugars that can cause flatulence if not properly broken down during digestion.

Hemp milk is generally more expensive, but can be made at home without greater difficulties.

== Related products ==
Soy milk and oat milk (and perhaps sometimes other types of plant milk) can be used to make [[yogurt]], [[ice cream]], [[cream]] and other products.

'''Vitamin C''' (Ascorbic acid) helps to repair tissue. It chemically decomposes (loses its chemical quality and therefore benefits) during the cooking of food, long storage, or juicing largely by leaching or oxidation.
It is considered to be a ‘water soluble vitamin’ as it exits the body via the kidney (aka. urine).
