Ghent, also Gaunt, is a city in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is the capital and largest city of the East Flanders province, with a Population of about 260,341.

Ghent has been Named Europe’s Veggie Capital, in 2018[1]

They have the largest number of vegetarian restaurants per capita and became the world's first city to go vegetarian at least once a week when it launched ‘veggie Thursday’ in 2009[2].


Vegetarian effort from city government

The city promotes a meat-free day on Thursdays called Donderdag-Veggiedag with vegetarian food being promoted in public canteens for civil servants and elected councillors and in all city funded schools.

  • Avalon, was the city’s oldest vegetarian restaurant. It was one of the stops on the Nibbling in Style tour with Leen Verhaeghe from tour company Vizit. Its owner gave demonstrations of how to cook a meat substitute called seitan, which she serves up with an array of vegan side dishes.
