Indian cuisine is great for vegetarians. Although prepared food often contains dairy, there is a big variety of raw fruits and vegetables available for vegans.
Labeling used in India to distinguish vegetarian products from non-vegetarian.

India is a great place for vegetarians. For vegans things are not so easy as a lot of food is prepared with dairy such as ghee. In general it helps to state that you're "pure veg", which already means vegetarian and no eggs. If you want to avoid dairy you'll have to state this and be very clear about it, and possibly repeat your statement 4 times or so (as things go in India).
