Being a vegan in Poland can be hard because there is a lot of people who do not tolerate that some are different from others. In a deeply conservative country, this challenge to traditional cuisine has provoked a backlash, with veganism seen as part of a broader threat to Polish culture, values and even religion.

However, it is not impossible, and there is a strong tendency for the number of vegans in Poland to grow. You will still encounter many folks (especially in small localities) who barely know the concept of, or the term veganism, as well as vegetarianism.

Nonetheless, there are quite a few vegan or vegetarian restaurants, espeially in bigger cities. According to a 2019 study, 1 million Polish residents are vegetarian or vegan and a further two million are intending to join them.

Activism

The best known Polish group promoting veganism is EMPATIA.

There are also some other groups promoting veganism and vegetarianism in general, including an amateur sports team, Vege runners.

Ban on fur

In SEP 2020, the lower House of Parliament (Sejm) voted to ban fur farming in the country. Poland is the third largest fur producer in the world.
