The Olive Tree is Beirut's first explicitly vegetarian organic shop, which also operates a delivery service and a small restaurant area. They stock packed food, a lot of it imported from Germany, but also some local produce, and some fresh fruit and vegetables and usually offer fresh pastries and cookies. Their assortment includes chickpea flour, soy, almond and oat drinks, tofu, and they're working on stocking nutritional yeast.

This boutique belongs to Fair Trade Lebanon which promotes fairer business relations by selling products made by Lebanese cooperatives for fairer remuneration and by providing further support. The shop mostly sells traditional Lebanese staple food like pulses and grains, jams, pickles, syrups, olive oil and wine (ask if it's vegan) but also beautifully simple vegan (excluding animal testing) soap bars. Visit their website to see all their products. Their olive oil and wine are certified organic and more of their products are in the process of labelling and some carry the international Fair Trade Label. Sometimes products are out of stock as they are not produced in huge masses, so it's advisable to call ahead.

Revision as of 14:15, 25 April 2015

Beirut has only one explicitly vegetarian restaurant (as of April 2015), but vegan dishes abound in traditional Beiruti food. This restaurant is at the same time a vegetarian organic shop, the only one there is in Beirut, but there are many health food shops and conventional supermarkets that stock items which are very helpful for a vegan diet (from soy drink and faux cheeses to vegan and cruelty-free toiletries).

Beit As-Soha

  • Jean Dominique Ayoub Street X Afred Naccache Street, Hôtel Dieu; 01-398366

This is Beirut's oldest organic shop and one of its biggest. They mostly have local produce from fruit and vegetable to nuts and conserves, but also imported foods which you would expect in an organic shop and vegan detergents. The local produce doesn't carry any organic label, since the shop has decided to skip them after carrying different labels for some years. They also sell vegan artisanal cookies and muffins.
