Umeå is a university town in northern Sweden.

History

In the 1990s it became a centre of Swedish vegan culture when many hardcore punk straight edge groups picked up this ideology and promoted it in their lyrics. At the same time the term "militant vegan" was coined in Swedish media after a phenomenon when Swedish Animal Liberation Front activists started to release minks from fur farms, damage properties of companies which raised or experimented with animals, etc. Some vegan activists where jailed afterwards.

A 1996 study of over 67,000 Swedish students between the ages of 16 and 20 found that there is a particularly high concentration of vegans in Umeå. 3.3% of the students in Umeå were vegan, three to four times as many as are found in other cities in Sweden (ref.1,2).
